Kek Lok Si Temple

It's the time of the year where the Biggest Chinese temple in penang is lighted up beatifully in conjuction with Chinese New Year. Every year, i have hiked up the same hill to take the same shots and basically same thing every year.

But i was still determined to hike up this hill for photos this year but this time, with a special twist. I decided to try my skills on time lapse photography and this is the results of 1 hour shoot with 147 photos and countless hours of editing. Do enjoy the video. I have another longer and hopefully better video coming up :D

Penang 5th International 12 Hours Walk

It's a non stop 12 hours walk round and round and round esplanade. I thought to myself, how hard could it be ?! Besides running was not allowed and all i had to do is walk for 12 hours. I have done Kinabalu which i walk almost non stop for 2 days without an issue.

So after thinking bout it for 2-3 days, i signed up and headed for hell. The "HOW HARD COULD IT BE ?" was indeed extremely hard. In fact it was harder than a half marathon. My first 10 laps i was cool... still going on.. my 15th lap, i was starting to suffer and motivating myself that it wasn't the pain. On my 21st lap, i couldn't continue anymore.

By then i had already done 4 hours of walk. I stopped for refreshments during the midnite and the next 45 minutes i finished my last 4 laps (about 4 km) to complete the needed 24km to qualify for finisher medal. The next 7 hours 15 minutes i only managed to walk another extra 4 laps. My legs was in so much pain and i was so tired i felt like collapsing on where i was standing. All in all it was a crazy experience

Motorola Paintball

Motorola (the company i work in) recently organized an annual Paintball competition. I naturally, joined this competition. We fought for our lives and made it to semi finals. There we fall and only end up in 4th place. It's actually a good achievement considering that it's my first time joining a Paintball competition :)

Year in review

And so another year passes by. So on the last day of 2009 i shall review my last years resolution and then make my next year's resolution. So here goes :-

1. Get promotion - guess this didn't happen so i must work harder next year

2. Save more money - YEAH this one pass. I finally have enough salary to save up money hahaha

3. Hike Gunung Kinabalu - Greatest achievement of this year :) my hike was on the October 26 to October 30th. I however wish to climb it again

Seems like i got 2 out of 3 of my resolutions :). How about this year..

1. Buy a House !

2. Buy a Nintendo DSi

3. Help Yoke Ming with her final year project

4. Bring forward get promotion and big big bonus from finishing my work project on time

5. "SECRET" lol (actually this is also brought forward)

6. Secondary but i wish to climb Mount Kinabalu again :D

Looks like i have set more resolutions for myself on the year 2010 hope i fulfill all these resolutions :D

Chingay 2009

One of the most unique parades in the world can be found in Penang. It is known as the Chingay Parade. What exactly is Chingay ? it a parade with big big flags. Trained people will attempt stunts with these flags. Besides these flags, there will be dragon dance and lion dance and not forgetting motorized floats. See Below for some photos

What land am i talking about ? For those who don't know, it's Sabah of East Malaysia ! i was there for 1 week on a mission to conquer Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia and the mountain that most hikers in Malaysia have close to their hearts

We set of on Monday, 26th October 2009, after more than 6 months of preparation and anticipation. The day has finally come. Woke up early and went to the airport check-in and had breakfast without a problem and soon....

And again not long after, i was in the air on the way to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

The flight took 3 hours, i tried to order krispy creme donuts but they were out of stock :( Nevertheless we arrived earlier than expected thanks to great weather. We took some photos before we departed the plane

We had lunch at the airport, took a taxi to our hotel of the day, Palace Hotel, and then soon after, 3pm we set of to Kota Kinabalu's City Centre, Centre Point. We stroll around the seaside

Look for souveniers at the Filipino Market, where there are rows and rows of souvenir shops. You will be lost for so many options, key chains, masks, guitars, pearls, t-shirts etc.... to understand what i meant

After souvenirs, it's already 6pm. For Sabah, since it's located in the East, 6pm is almost like 7pm in West Malaysia, the sun is already setting, so we set off and got back to Kompleks Karamunsing (A shopping kompleks near our hotel) bought some hiking necessities and had our dinner, played pool and sang some some in karaoke in the place we had dinner and called it a day

Have you ever seen Georgetown ? If you have, have you ever seen Georgetown in a way i'm about to present it to you ? :)

This photo was taken 760ft above the ground on a building. Now for most Penangites they would have already guessed it, i'm on the tallest building in Penang. The KOMTAR tower, on the 61st floor of the building (1 floor from the Helipad). What was i doing there ? Stay tuned and i will tell you.

Dennis and Carmen

My friend, Carmen got married to Dennis recently. They invited me to shoot some pre-wedding photos for them and i naturally agreed (as i'm a addict photographer and also wanna move into this field). Since it was my first time shooting any pre-wedding, i had no experience.

So i went on the internet and did alot of research (apparently still not enough) and then decided that we will shoot in either Heritage or Balik Pulau Penang. The day arrived and i found out if you're going to shoot in heritage areas, we have to pay the heritage owners quite an amount of cash. So we dropped the heritage idea (But did take 1 shot in the Heritage area) and went on to Balik Pulau.

Balik Pulau is a secluded village on the east side of the island. Being secluded, it's fairly underdeveloped so you could find many interesting sceneries. We went to the beach, Pantai Pasir Panjang. Being my first time, i'm met with few problems. 1. i dunno how to pose my couple. 2. the sun is too bright to shoot any good background and still leaving the couple coloured... ! Nevertheless, i tried avoiding the sky and still did get a few good shots

After that to a Fishing village near the beach (Pulau Betong Fishing Village)

And then after that, got lost around Balik Pulau for about 30-45 minutes cause we could find the paddy field (due to confusing maps). But we got there after all.

It was a hot day and by the time we got home, we're all exhausted (and i had to attend another friend's wedding dinner). But had fun.

Oh before i forget, here are some shots in the Moral Uplifting Society where my friend got their marriage solemnized in the morning before we went off for the photo shooting in Balik Pulau :)

The Johoreans won yet again for this Lion Dance Competition on stilts. (From what i read, they have won 30th times and still winning). Make Malaysia proud. Most people would have thought the China team to be best, but no, surprisingly, China's team was sent packing on the first day along with both the Singaporean team and Thailand team. All 3 Malaysian team (2 Johor and 1 Penang team) made it to the finals along with the Taiwan and Hong Kong Team.

Me and 3 other friends went to Cameron Highlands during the Raya Holidays. In case you dunno where Cameron Highlands is, it's located in near the Perak Border in Pahang. it's a 57 km drive from the town of Ipoh, Perak and takes about 1 hour to drive from Ipoh. (bout 3 Hours drive from Penang !!)

We visited tea farms, strawberry farms, vegetable farms and ate steamboat. All that was to do in Cameron Highlands :). Stay tuned for Part 2

Off to Marathon and Back

I was away for the weekends. Where did i go ? The Malaysian Capital City of Kuala Lumpur. Did i take any pictures ?.... yes most definately.. but not much. :) see below. I was concentrating on my marathon more rather then photography.. besides my cousin (who was following) doesn't like backpacking much... so she's always nagging of leg pain, hungry and thirsty...

All in all i had a good trip and finish my 21km Marathon in 2 hours 44 mins.. 30 mins off my expected target.

KL, Standard Chattered Marathon

Yeah ! i'm heading for the KL Standard Chattered Marathon this weekend.

Running a half marathon (20km). Just to scale the distance, if you were driving 100km / hour it would take you 15 minutes drive to do 20kms, and i'm attempting to run it (which this time i estimate to do it in 2 hours 15 minutes... give and take). Wish me luck and see you at the finish line for those who are going to support me :P

A Story of a Forgotten Jeweller

Mr Lah Guan, 59 years old (as i was told by him) was a gold smith in Balik Pulau, Penang. He changed his profession to Silver smith not long ago and has been a jeweller all his life. All his crafts are handmade by himself.

These pieces are all handmade by Mr Lah Guan himself, using the tools shown below. Unfortunately, Mr Lah Guan claims that he's too old to do complicated pieces now and some of his more delicate pieces are not for sale anymore.

So, if you're looking for silver jewellery and cheap and high quality ones, remember our very own Penang Mr Lah Guan of Balik Pulau

His shop is located very near to the Balik Pulau's roundabout. If you can't find this shop, just ask around, he's famous in Balik Pulau and if not mistaken, he's open 7 days a week :) and a very good salesman.. visit him and you'll know what i meant

I didn't really get alot of pictures as this is the first time i tried to do a photo outting only with my 50mm.. but still, i'm really happy with some of the photos that i've got.

Balik Pulau, Penang, is a flat land on the other side of Penang Island. To get there, one must either cross a hill, or take a boat. Because of that, the place is fairly un-developed and so, you can still see vast padi fields and etc. Here's a panoramic view of the padi field i took the other day when i was there. WTF Taekwondo Competition

There's a taekwondo competition going on from 9th June to 10th June in Queensbay Mall. I was there to shoot some action. The first day.. i was using my 50 mm Lense.. hoping to freeze the action. It was hell shooting as everyone was giving a flying kick here and there..

My Cousin got married.... !! So naturally, i was listed photographer... so here are photographs of the first night event ( a Buffet Dinner at the apartment's multi purpose hall). In total i took more than 600 pictures... so i'm processing them one by one now..

KOMTAR Tower Run 2009

KOMTAR, or KOMplex(Komplex = complex in malay) Tunku Abdul Rahman is the tallest building in Penang. It houses a few shopping mall, the Penang Govermental Offices (The Chief Minister's Office is there) and a Hotel (Currently the Traders Hotel).

Since this year, the new government take over, there has been alot of effort taken to revive the KOMTAR building (which is turning into a big gigantic abandoned building) so, a KOMTAR tower run has been organized.

The run features :-

a 2km run around the whole KOMTAR complex

60 floor run up the tower (comprising approximately 1,237 steps .... thats rite One Thousand Two Hundred and Thirty Seven Steps !)

This has not been done since the year 2002 (7 years) and the new government of penang has decided to do this in line of reviving the KOMTAR complex.

There were 1,147 Participants and the fatest guy did it in 12 minutes ++ ( that was really fast). I personally done it in 25-30 minutes... and my mind was already giving up on me on level 30 lol.

Unfortunately, because i was concentrating on running, i didn't bring along my camera with me... so i was picture-less for this post.

Penang Floral Festival

I had Komtar Tower Run in the morning, so i was concentrating on running rather than photography. By the time i got to the Floral Festival, the ceremony is already over and it's already too hot to shoot anything :(. Nevertheless i did shoot a few pictures and so here are they

I will detail my ordeal on Komtar Tower Run on a later post. I sadly do not have any pictures of the run though and really regrets it as there was a really nice photography opputunity as we begin our run into the KOMTAR tower.

Breakout Extreme Dance

Breakout extreme dance is a korean dance comedy play. It chronicles about 5 inmates of escape from jail and how these 5 remain elusive to the officers. In between the play they will breakdance just to fill in the gap.

Altho these actors are particularly unknown, they really have great acting skills and dancing skills. Thus i highly recommend you go watch their second and last show in Penang, 28th May 2009 at 8.30pm (be there early to get good seats !)

Penang Dragon Boat Festival, Competition Day 1

It's the first day of the International Dragon Boat Festival. The first day is only open to local teams and the winner of the local team today will be qualified for the Competition of internationals the tomorrow. (If not mistaken). I was there at 8:45 am to around 2pm and thanks to Miss Peggy of VisitPenang.gov.my (who provided me with a volounteer badge) i manage to take many good shots (altho i did not have a good zoom lense). It's been awhile since i last posted anything to this blog. So now i finally found some time to post something up. This time it's on an event that was help in the Penang Indoor Sports Arena (a.k.a PISA). The event was named BriPEX or Bridal, Photography Exhibition. It wasn't much of a bridal nor a photography exhibition, rather it's like a camera and bridal package sales fair. Nevertheless the bridal company had a models run down the runway with their new wedding gowns and here's what i got out of the fair. Enjoy !

Recently, GOssip Penang held a mixed concert in the Esplanade Penang, called Party at the Park. it was a nice concert but sadly due to rain and not much publication (including no publication in visitpenang.gov.my) not much ppl were there.

My other friend was tired.. so i missed one buck short's performance.. sigh... but anyway.. not forgetting the crazy party people who partied with us crazy photographers in the rain.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button

yesterday, being movie day... i went and watch a movie titled the Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

It's a movie about a person who was borned old and then grows younger till he dies. It's a sad ending but it was really a good story. Supposedly it should have brought me to tears ... but it didn't.. it's odd.. haha. But i highly do recommend that you watch it

This post is kinda backdated as this shot was taken during the Little Penang Street Market. As i did not have the time to post process those images, so i moved on with my other posts... now that i have a long long holiday (Chinese New Year Holidays yay) i went back and post process my old pics...

Now back to the shot, this shot was taken when these group of teenagers had a street dance demo in the event. So i took few shots and found that they were all BAD.... why ? the group members standing behind the main dancers are just so distracting... sigh.. what i did... TURN them in BLACK and WHITE... here's the result ! :P

Kek Lok Si During Chinese New Year

Okie so what were we doing on a hill adjacent to Kek Lok Si, this is the answer ! the official light up of Kek Lok Si Temple Penang. Every chinese new year, the temple will be lighted up beatifully for about 1 month. So on the first day, there will ussually be fireworks. To get best view of the fireworks, me and a group of other friends (and tons of other photographers.. bout 20-30 of them) was perched on top of a hill side (farm for some plant) and waited till bout 7.30-8pm. Then, the magic happened...

Rated one of the biggest and most beautiful temple of South East Asia. (if not mistaken)

Since i've never been there and i was on the way to shoot sunset in Balik Pulau (again), i had to pass by the route to the restaurant. Being in Penang Island almost my whole life, i've surprisingly never seen an actual sun set by the beach side. Since i was bored and lonely.. i opened up wikimapia, google earth and search through my gps maps and i found a beach facing directly west. The name of the beach is Pantai Pasir Panjang and it's in Balik Pulau (Technically the other side of the Island). I set out on my car with a friend and headed for the beach. Bout 30-45 Minutes later i arrived at the beach. Although it wasn't really a very nice sunset (hazy) but nevertheless it was my first actual sunset.

Turns out penang do have a great sunset but to see it. You gotta do abit of travelling

Penang 6th Lion Dance Competition

Few days ago, i went to this small Lion Dance Competition that was held in the Gurney Plaza New Wing... it's a very small event comprising of 5 teams only. Yeah, the other day, we went to Teluk Kumbar to have seafood. You wouldn't imagine what we have to go through before we eventually get to indulge the seafood.

Fortunately, police came, and very surprisingly, they helped us get the car out of the ditch.. i should've taken a pic of them but i didn't... was too busy trying to get the car out. Anyway the police brought ropes and we had another car pull out the car and we're successful 1 1/2 hours later

Yeah, so another year passes by. How did i spent my new year's eve of 2008.. well i did it alone at Queensbay Mall Penang. But at least i was in a celebration somewhere. It was raining slightly though, but in the end, the fireworks went off. Short boring but with it marked the end of 2008 and the begining of 2009.. here are some pics that i took....

Last day of the Year

It's the last day of the year.. bye bye 2008 welcome 2009. Time flies by so fast that it's scary. I hope 2009 would be a much better year for me (not saying that 2008 was a bad year) but yeah, humans are never sastisfied with whatever they have.. so what to do ^_^

Some of my resolution for next year (a.k.a tommorow onwards)....

1. Get Promotion
2. Save more money
3. Hike Gunung Kinabalu
4. Bring forward my resolution from 2008 that i didn't achieve and make sure i achieve it this year !

Pesta Penang

Every year end, the Penang State Government host a month wide event called pesta. It's basically a sort of funfair. And as the years passby, the quality of the funfair gets worser and worser. I do hope the save the Pesta to it's original state (As the government said they are going to privatized the pesta organizations).

I went there for some photos and some funfair extreme rides. What i found is there's nothing much there to photograph except the rides area.. so here are some of the pics

I did take 2 of the rides (Guess which ones), which immediately after the ride... i got motion sicknes or gastric... and i end up in the clinic after that (Cause i didn't eat anything before i took the rides)

Week before New Year

The week before new year.. and 2 day working week before it's tuesday (Monday was a holiday due to the Awal Muharram) so we work on Tuesday and Wednesday and then Holiday again... and work again on Friday.. this is going to be such an unproductive week.

Since it's like 2 days left to New Year... it's the time of the year again to finalize my new year's resolution ! and review my previous year resolution. i did achieve some of my last year's resolution such as getting a wii, getting a camera (seems like all my resolutions involves spending money haha) become a better man... (i think in a way i achieve this but not enough)... etc etc... Some that i failed.. but will bring forward to next year which this time i'm determined to complete it..

Guess i will list some of my not so secret resolution for the year 2009 tomorrow or later today when i'm free ^_^

The Top of Penang

The Top of Penang, that's Penang Hill ! and me and my friends hiked up that hill this morning. The hill is 2,450 feet tall or 735 metres and we started early on the day. 7:30am to be exact, just as the sun rises, we departed from the base (which is at the youth park net ball court of Penang Island).

About 15 mins later, we came to stop no. 1 (a.k.a youth park stop no.3) and i got this shot.
As you can see, to the left is the high rises of Gurney Drive, the center the old GeorgeTown town center which includes Komtar building and if you look closely you should be able to spot the Umno building, and finally to the right, the apartments along or near to the Jelutong Expressway. Oso not forgetting beyond the sea, the hill which i believe is Bukit Mertajam (to the left of Komtar) or... Gunung Jerai of Kedah. couldn't recall which is it haha.

Fast forward an hour later, we arrive at the first bungalow lot that we encounter when hiking up the Penang Hill. named Grace Dieu, believed to be built on 1927. Googled it on it's history and sadly i couldn't really find any.. besides the fact that it's one of Penang Hill's bungalows.. oh well here are some pics..

And finally after 2.6km of bloody steep roads we finally reach the top of Penang ! known as Bukit Bendera (in Malay)... and here's proof.... =.= ->

The kilometer 5.1 sign that marks the end of the HIKE ! i swear i would hug it, if it was bigger and huggable size... lol. Spent bout 20 mins on that hill and then... like all hikes... we have to depart and start our journey down again.. sigh... oh and Penang Hill was foggy.. so i couldn't get any nice paranoma view of Penang there... maybe other time.

The secrets of Sungai Ara

I've been recently cycling around Sungai Ara and exploring a small track route behind my house... guess this road actually runs deep and up hill. I haven't got the stamina and strength to finish the hole route yet but this is what i've found so far :-

This track does run far up hill when i check in both wikimapia and my GPS. In wikimapia.org it's marked as a bicycle trail whereas in my GPS, it's marked as a farmer's route. Although i didn't see any farms in my cycling exploration, i did come across a government sign stating that this was a government project to build a small tar road for the farmers. Perhaps i will take a picture of that on my next trip there ^_^

This morning as i was driving to work, i met the King of the Road. There's this guy (i think he's mentally challenged as he was wearing torned cloths and all) walking in the middle of the road...

well just as i was reaching a junction he was there.. and then he suddenly stopped in the middle of the JUNCTION ! i was like OMG ! and breaking for my life.. lucky i was driving fast. Wanted to horn him but looking at his condition, haihz.. forgive him la.. so i did turn my steering and drove off... hope he will still be alive by tomolo (cause he crossed the MAIN ROAD WITH MANY CARS AS I PASSED THE JUNCTION) =.="" and there were buses honking at him
